Win Your Way to Austria in Online Satellites for the European Poker Championship Now on at Intertops and Juicy Stakes

Intertops Poker and Juicy Stakes Poker are well known for hosting online satellite tournaments that send winners to exotic locations to play poker.  Starting Thursday they're hosting their latest satellite tournaments and this time the winner will compete in the prestigious European Poker Championship in Velden, Austria this summer.

You can start the three-tier tournament series with a $3 buy-in for a Step 1 tourney and then try to win your way to the Final from there.  Or you can buy-in at any stage. The winner of the Final will get a $4000 prize package that includes €2700 buy-in to the EPC main event (July 27th to 30th), accommodation at a premium hotel and cash for travel expenses.

Last year three online satellite tournament winners from Intertops and Juicy Stakes (Tim O’Keefe, Gabor Kresco and Emil Hegedus) competed in Velden.

“The idea of scooping a win for insane amounts of money for only a cheap satellite entry online is living the dream to be sure!” said O’Keefe from his home in Texas.  “Not only do Intertops and Juicy Stakes pick great tournaments in great spots, they over deliver on taking care of their players.”

“I wish I could say I took home the title in Velden, but the experience itself was a win for sure,” recalls O’Keefe. “We all made day two, which is always tough and a plus for any poker player. The big buy-in and long structure always bring around the better players, so just making it that far was quite an accomplishment. I was a bit jealous the others hit the beach without me but I can't complain too much since I was playing for a chance at $142K and the trophy!”

Tim was eliminated early on Day 3 but Emil went out in 6th place. He was disappointed it wasn't a win, but the $26k in his pocket made him feel better very quickly!

European Poker Championship Prize Pool Over €700,000

Players from all over Europe (especially Germany and Italy) will play tournaments and cash games on more than 40 tables at the exclusive lakeside resort.

Intertops Poker Player Wins His Way to the Winter Poker Championship in Austria

Intertops Poker is sending another online satellite winner to a big poker tournament in Europe next month!  Douglas Klein, a Financial Analyst from LA, won an online satellite tournament last weekend where he was awarded a $4000 prize package to travel to Austria and compete in the prestigious Winter Poker Championship (formerly CAPT Seefeld). Douglas is a regular in his local casinos but this will be his first overseas tournament.

The Winter Poker Championship takes place at Casinos Austria, Seefeld February 24th to 26th.

Tim O’Keefe, who won his way to the Austrian ski resort the same way last year, will be with Douglas. Since his Seefeld experience last winter, Tim has been sponsored by Intertops and has competed in tournaments in St Maarten and Aruba with the Intertops Poker team.

Sunday’s Final, the last tournament in a three tier tournament series, was a nail-biter for Klein.

“With three players remaining, I flopped a set of 9s against AA and won a huge pot,” recalled the champion.  “I had the chip lead going into heads up so I felt like I would win.  I lost one big pot but then crippled my opponent shortly after.  I ended up by putting my opponent all-in with 88.  He had A7.  That was it.  The most exciting moment I've had playing poker – and now I’m going to Europe!”

Klein won a $4,000 prize package that includes €2160 buy-in to the Winter Poker Championship Main Event (February 24th to 26th), premium accommodation in the Tyrolean ski resort, and travel expenses. The online satellite tournaments were co-hosted by Intertops Poker and Juicy Stakes Poker.

The winner has a strategy for winning online tournaments that certainly worked for him this time.

“I try to play pretty tight for the first few levels while maintaining at least an average stack,” he explained.  “As the blinds increase, I play more aggressively, opening with a wider range and bluffing more.  In the middle levels, I feel like you have to take chances to get chips. If I have 15-20 BB and it’s close to the final table, I lower the amount of my opening raises and play aggressively in position.  This strategy seems to work well.  I have a decent win rate.”

“I’ve never played in an event as big as the Winter Poker Championship in Seefeld,” he said.  “The biggest tournament I ever played in was a $500 buy-in with about 100 players.  I finished on the bubble.  Aside from that, I've played in several small tournaments in Las Vegas, Palm Springs and Commerce Casino in Los Angeles.”

Douglas will have his wife with him for moral support, and O’Keefe will be there to help him get the lay of the land.

“My first time over there I couldn’t believe how differently they play in Europe!” said O’Keefe.  “Maybe all that schnitzel makes them so aggressive? I don’t know, but I’m more ready for them this year, that’s for sure!”

Douglas is Intertops' latest satellite tournament winner travelling to a big live tournament -- but not the last! A new online satellite tournament series that will send the winner to the $75K TKPT Caribbean tournament in St Maarten begins next week.

The Gamblogger Joins Three Online Players Living the Dream in Austria this Weekend

This week I'm with three online satellite winners from Intertops Poker and Juicy Stakes Poker who are in Austria for the 800,000€ CAPT Seefeld poker tournament. In the days prior to the Main Event Chris, Daniel and Tim played as many smaller tournaments and cash games as they could, taking the opportunity to check out their competition. They all agreed that the field is fairly soft and so were a bit disappointed not to have picked up some cash before the big tournament that brought them to the picturesque Tyrolian ski resort.

Video: Living the Dream: CAPT Seefeld, Episode 1 -- Checking Out the Competition

Daily video reports from CAPT Seefeld follow three online satellite winners from Intertops Poker and Juicy Stakes Poker at the 800,000 Euro tournament in Austria.

“It’s taken me awhile to get used to these European players’ style,” said Chris who came to Austria from Pittsburgh. “They all seem to be extremely cautious or extremely aggressive, not too many that fall somewhere in the middle like I do.”

“The structure of these smaller tournaments sucks,” said Tim O’Keefe from Texas. “They’re too fast. No time to get a read on the other players. I’m looking forward to the Main Event where we have more time and more chips to play with.”

“The way the Main Even is structured, you can easily grind because you get 50,000 chips and sixty minute levels. You don’t have so many showdowns like in the turbo tournaments,“ agreed Daniel, a local poker pro who lives in nearby Innsbruck.

“It’s so deep and the blinds increase so slowly so you can really play your hands and you’re not all in all that often. You’re always deep. That’s very nice!”

"Living the Dream -- no better way to describe this trip!” said Tim. “I've only been in Austria two days and would already say this is an experience of a lifetime! The amazing architecture, history and beautiful scenery have kept me so busy and excited, that I almost forgot we are here to play poker!! Haha It might be too amazing here to play as both Daniel and I have come up short, getting pretty unlucky in a couple of the smaller buy in events so far. No worries though, I'm convinced we are just saving all for the main event!”

“The people at Intertops have done an incredible job here,” he added. “They’ve gone above and beyond for us players. I cannot thank them enough!”

Intertops and Juicy Stakes Poker, the main online poker rooms on the Horizon Poker Network, have become well known for running online satellite tournaments sending winners to live tournaments in Europe and the Caribbean. Last fall, five online winners went to CPT Punta Cana together and right now there’s an online satellite tournament series in progress that will send five players to the TKPT tournament in St Maarten in April. The series continues until March 6th with Step 1 tournaments in the three-tier series (buy in $2 + $.20) every day at 11am, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm and 10pm EST. From there, you can win your way to Finals held Sundays at 9 pm EST, where $3000 prize packages are awarded to the winners, or buy-in to those events for $100 + $10.

My Living the Dream: CAPT Seefeld video series will continue with video reports from the Main Event.

“I’ve been to some great places, playing poker,” said Daniel Montagnolli, an Innsbruck local who won his way to CPT Punta Cana at Intertops and will be joining other winners in Seefeld. “This time it’s cool to have the poker world come to ME!”

Online players like Daniel share their live tournament experiences on the Living the Dream blog  which will have daily video reports from Seefeld February 23-28.

“I like CAPT tournaments because all kinds of people come to play: pros as well as people on holiday,” Christoph said after nearly winning.  “There’s a good mix of people and playing skills. For me it’s also fun to meet a lot of players that I know but don’t see very often.”

Intertops Poker Players Return from CAPT Velden Happy, if not Winners

Intertops Poker Players Enjoyed CAPT Velden Austrian Poker TournamentI told you last month about two Intertops Poker players that won their way to CAPT Velden, the Casinos Austria Poker Tour event.  Well, turns out Christoph and Michael did OK the first day but didn’t make it to the final day of their €500 event. Although the weekend at the Austrian casino resort didn’t end as they’d hoped they had a good time anway.  I mean, they WON their trips to Velden in online qualifiers at Intertops so they were ahead before they left home! -

A player known only as “Joe” beat 214 other players to win the NLH Main Event at CAPT Velden, taking €105,400 of the €395,000 prize pool.

“Velden is one of the biggest tournaments in the CAPT season in terms of participants and it takes place in a great setting!” Christoph said. “It’s kind of the kick-off tournament. For me it’s also fun to meet a lot of players that I know but don’t see very often.”

“I played OK but I was very unhappy with one hand where all signs were telling me that my opponent was bluffing but I didn't have the guts to call with my weak hand. After I folded, my analysis was proven to be right when my opponent showed his cards.” “

"Competition was good this year, many players of different skills. Fun to play them and I learned a few things from observing some fun hands that went down on my table.”

Online Tournament Champion Returns to CAPT Velden Courtesy Intertops Poker

Intertops Poker Tournament Champion Headed for CAPT Velden Where Poker Manager Promises VIP Treatment During Austrian CasinoAn Intertops Poker player that won an online tournament at the popular poker room will be returning to Austria’s most luxurious casino resort this weekend for the €1,000,000 CAPT Velden poker tournament. Intertops’ poker manager will accompany “Christoph” to the €500 event he’s playing on Saturday.

Talking about his approach to tournament play, the Intertops champion said his strategy depends on the buy-in.

“In the early levels I try to get a feeling for the table dynamics and players playing tendencies. I try to keep my chips together for the later stages, where the pots are bigger and making moves is more profitable than in the early stages.”

“If the buy-in is higher, that is exactly the strategy I would follow. But if it’s lower, I would deviate from it and play more hands even in the early levels – against better knowledge.”

Last year Christoph almost won the €500 buy-in event in Velden. Even so, he wasn’t entirely happy with his game play.

“There wasn’t anything that I did particularly good that I liked.  Maybe coming to the final table I realized somebody else tried to be the table bully so I decided to not mess with him - despite my chip lead - and I sat back and merely watched players eliminating each other until we were down to two.”

“But  I shouldn’t have called a 3-bet shove from a tight player close to the final table with AQ, even though that was a pretty standard play for both him (shoving 12 BBs with AK) and me. Of course you’re always smarter in hindsight and in a 3-day tournament you will have to survive situations where you are behind.”

“Honestly, my tournament hands weren’t spectacular, they were all pretty straight-forward. But if I had one to brag about it’s this one: Down to 2 tables, out of a stack of 40 BBs, I opened from the middle position with KsQh, only to be called by the chip leader at that point, who I observed for some time now. The board comes Ah,9h,7c. Obviously, against a loose-defending Big Blind, I conti-bet this board and get called. At this stage I am not too worried because I saw the guy check-raising with top-pair or better in these situations. The turn is quite fortunate, a Kh gives me 2nd pair and the nut-flush draw. My opponent thinks for a long time and checks, I do so too. The river blanks with something like 2d. My opponents bets a bit over pot size, which at this point is quite meaningful, like half of 2/3 stack. I only have second pair and a flush is possible. Given the action that lead up to the river, I am rather certain that in this spot he is more likely to have a busted draw than a hand that beats me, or at least it is equally likely. For the call to be correct according to the pot-odds, I’d only need to be ahead 1/3 of the time. So I called after a minute or two and he mucks his cards and I was the new chip leader.”

“It wasn’t until the third player was eliminated that I realized I might win. I usually try to stay pessimistic because in tournaments it’s all over so quickly and you might be disappointed if you toss with the idea of winning too soon. I’ve played so many tournaments – if I’d won half as many as the number of tournaments where I had a chip lead at some point, I’d be rich!”

“I like Velden because the competition is superb. The whole event has so much flair. All kinds of people come to play: pros as well as people on holiday that just happen to realize there’s a poker tournament. So there is a good mixture of people and playing skills and the challenge is to realize who’s who and how to play against each one."

“One thing I tell people that are new to tournaments: never play at buy-ins where you feel uncomfortable. I think one thing you can say with certainty is you’re not playing your best if you can’t afford the buy-in.”

“Playing online has definitely has helped me a lot. Even though there are big differences between online and offline poker, there is no substitute for the experience of many thousands of online hands, where you play at least 10-20x as many hands in the same time.“

“I just enjoy playing Poker for fun. At the same time, I am quite ambitious and always try to improve my game, through discussions with friends, statistical analysis or reading. I would not take playing poker to the next level even if I had the chance to do so, simply because I feel I would lose the joy of playing. Also I feel that I am playing at my best when I don’t play too much and I don’t disregard my other hobbies.”
