Event organizers for the Punta Cana Poker Classic announced today the implementation of improvements to this year’s event based upon feedback from their inaugural tournament in 2010 . The improvements will include adding a professional dealing staff with World Series of Poker experience, and opening up the cash game room to run 24 hours a day.

The Punta Cana Poker Classic is an annual land based Texas Hold’em poker tournament held at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The event will have a $500,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool and be preceded by a $100,000 Guaranteed High Roller Backgammon Tournament.

The Rules are Wrong and a Flush Should Beat Quads -- Nic Szeremeta Challenges Orthodox Thinking

Nic Szeremeta has always been willing to shake things up in the poker world. In 1999 he created Late Night Poker for Channel 4, the first poker show to use the hole card cam, and helped to kick-start the poker boom in the UK. But now it’s Szeremeta’s mission to point out to all the card rooms and casinos that spread strip-deck poker, live and online, that they’ve been shipping the pots in the wrong direction for years. This is because, in accordance with the immutable laws of mathematics, a flush should beat quads.

The Independent newspaper’s poker columnist sets out his argument in the new issue of Bluff Europe, out Monday 3rd October. “According to the principles upon which hand rankings are based, a flush should beat four-of-a-kind. The reason is that a flush occurs less frequently (can be made in fewer ways) than four-of-a-kind in a 32 card deck.

“This is not advanced maths; it is an easy sum,” says Nic. “As it’s more difficult to make a flush than to make four-of-a-kind (around 10% more difficult), it therefore follows that the holder of a flush against quads should have the pot pushed in his or her direction.”

Nic calls on regulators to change the rules: “Even more money is going to be pushed in the wrong direction unless both the Internet card rooms and the brick and mortar casinos who offer ace to 7 games change their hand rankings,” he says.

Young gun Jake Cody captured two of the British Poker Awards presented at the fifth annual Poker in the Park poker festival in London this weekend where “the pokerati” gathered to remember a fantastic year in UK poker. Hosted by comedian Lucy Porter and Bluff Europe’s Michael Caselli, nominees had been decided by a committee that included editors of Bluff Europe Magazine and PokerNews.com and “The Voice of Poker” himself, Jesse May, with winners decided by public vote.

The public voted for youth as players in their twenties swept the board. Comedy, Live Jazz and Magic Highlight Poker in the Park Entertainment Line-up

Alongside poker tournaments and training, there will be an exciting entertainment line-up on the main stage at Poker in the Park this weekend. Palm Beach's Richard Poyner, comedian Lucy Porter and extreme card manipulator Scott Thompson will appear on stage at Poker in the Park, Europe’s largest free poker festival this weekend.

Kicking off proceedings at 3pm on Friday, belting out favourite cover classics, will be the music of the Palm Beach’s very own Richard Poyner. Next up will be chess International Master Malcolm Pein, taking on multiple players at once, with members of the public invited to pit their wits against the great man.

Taking the stage at 4.30 will be The Swinging Little Big Band (www.littlebigband.co.uk) one of the UK’s most exciting live acts, who will be performing Rat Pack style jazz with a modern twist.

Following that will be a spot of celebrity “Indian Poker” before the Incredible Card Sharks take the stage. At 7pm Bigblindmedia will present a one hour masterclass in card manipulation. Hosted by award-winning sleight of hand magician Andi Gladwin (a globe trotting performer, publisher of over 20 books on close up magic and consultant and writer for numerous magic television shows), it promises to lift the veil on the secretive world of card sharps.

Andi will be joined onstage by Scott Thompson, one of the UK’s leading proponents of XCM (eXtreme Card Manipulation), for a display of playing-card gymnastics that will positively fry your eyeballs.

On Saturday 3rd, at 12pm, chess Grand Master Simon Williams will be playing spot of speed chess against the public, before comedian Lucy Porter takes the stage to present the British Poker Awards at 3pm. The ceremony will include a charity auction to raise money for Peace and Sport (www.peace-sport.org). Among the items to go under Lucy’s hammer will be Barcelona and Arsenal shirts signed by the teams. The public is encouraged to participate in the auction to raise money for this worthy cause.

Next up will be card ninja, Javier Jarquin, in whose hands a playing card becomes a lethal weapon and it has to be seen to be believed.

Rounding off proceedings, after another musical interlude from Poyner, will be the final table of the Poker in the Park 2011 poker final table, as well as the final table of the record-breaking Mahjong tournament (the biggest ever in the UK), followed by the crowning of the winners.
